Leo Laporte’s book

I bought Leo Laporte’s 2003 Technology Almanac the other day. If you don’t know, Leo is the host of The Screen Savers on TechTV. I’ve been a fan of his for years. I even met him once. His “high-energy wit, wisdom and style” makes learning about computers fun. The book is organized with a new tip for every day of the year, just like an almanac. It’s filled with stories, tips and links to great places on the web.

Back in the early days of TechTV, then known as ZDTV, Leo hosted The Screen Savers with Kate Botello. The two made a great pair and made the show very fun to watch. I would pick up stuff I didn’t know about computers with each episode. Sadly, Kate left the show a few years back and Patrick Norton took her place. Now the show takes very few live calls and doesn’t talk about computer troubleshooting all that much. Before I could never miss an episode. Now its no big deal if I don’t catch the show for weeks at a time.

Pam bought a Palm Tungsten today. Her Handspring Visor Prism was dying and old. Now she has a great new unit loaded with apps. The Tungsten is bluetooth capable but it doesn’t have anything to talk with. Maybe in the near future we’ll get some bluetooth running on the home network so she can sync and surf her unit from around the house. But the unit has a great compact size, a brilliant display (nicer than my iPAQ) and lots of memory. And it comes with a free camera and a Scrabble/Monopoly game card.
